Social media activist and former abduction survivor Billy Mwangi has raised alarm over threats to his life following a controversial post falsely attributed to him, which appeared to target the family of Albert Ojwang—the blogger who died in police custody.
Speaking to the press on Thursday, June 19, Mwangi, 24, said he has been receiving threatening messages from unknown individuals after a post surfaced on X (formerly Twitter) from an account bearing his name. The post accused Meshack Ojwang, Albert’s father, of allegedly accepting KSh2 million from President William Ruto.
Mwangi, however, denied authoring the post, clarifying that his verified X account had been suspended weeks earlier and that he had no control over the impersonating handle.
“The account is fake. My original X account was suspended. I am not behind that post,” he told reporters.
According to Mwangi, the threats escalated after the impersonating account shared Albert Ojwang’s personal phone number and encouraged followers to “greet him”—a move widely interpreted as incitement against the grieving family.
Fearing for his safety, Mwangi said he visited the Directorate of Criminal Investigations (DCI) headquarters on Kiambu Road to file a formal complaint. However, he claimed that police took no action.
“I went to DCI to report the threats, but nothing has been done. I am fearing for my life,” he said.
Authorities have yet to comment publicly on the threats or the impersonation claim.
