How instability, poor striking and internal rifts cost Gor Mahia KPL title

Kenya Police FC are the new kings of the FKF Premier League, clinching their maiden league title after a dramatic victory over Shabana FC on Sunday.

A 75th-minute header from defender Brian Okoth sealed the 1-0 win, sparking celebrations among Police supporters and ending Gor Mahia’s hopes of a third consecutive crown.

Gor Mahia Left to Salute the Champions

Despite beating Ulinzi Stars 3-2, Gor Mahia will not be celebrating their record 22nd title. Instead, they’ll perform the guard of honour for Kenya Police in the final round of matches next weekend — a painful conclusion to a turbulent season.

3 Key Reasons Gor Mahia Lost the Title Race

1. Coaching Instability Undermined Momentum

Three coaching changes in one season proved too costly for Gor Mahia. The club started with Leonardo Neiva, replaced him with Zedekiah ‘Zico’ Otieno on an interim basis, before appointing Sinisa Mihic in February. By May, Mihic was gone, and Zico was back in charge.

🗣️ “Too many tactical shifts and inconsistent messaging affected player performance,” said a former club insider.

In contrast, the previous seasons under Johnathan McKinstry offered stability and clear direction, culminating in back-to-back titles.

2. Lack of a Clinical Striker Post-Omala

Gor Mahia never truly replaced Benson Omala, their prolific forward who left last August. Omala had netted 45 league goals across the previous two seasons, and his absence was felt despite his midseason return.

New signings like Gedeon Bendeka and Enock Morrison failed to match his scoring output, and midfielder Austin Odhiambo had to shoulder the goalscoring load, netting 11 times.

📉 Bendeka finished with just six goals — a stark indicator of the team’s struggles up front.

3. Dressing Room Turmoil and Suspensions

Gor Mahia’s season was also marred by dressing room discord. Early conflicts between Neiva and several players — including Ronney Onyango, who was dropped — created rifts within the squad.

Later, four players were suspended for participating in an unsanctioned match, and coach Mihic publicly clashed with playmaker Austin Odhiambo, accusing him of not following instructions.

🔥 Infighting and mistrust filtered onto the pitch, costing the team valuable points in tight matches.

What Next for Gor Mahia?

With Kenya Police now setting the standard, K’Ogalo must regroup quickly, especially with continental football on the horizon. A strategic rebuild, starting with coaching clarity and strengthening the attack, will be key to their revival.

Sauce Sports Takeaway

Kenya Police FC’s triumph is a story of consistency, tactical discipline, and off-field stability — everything Gor Mahia lacked this season.

From title favorites to runners-up saluting a new champion, Gor’s fall from grace offers plenty of lessons — for fans and football management alike.
