KAKAMEGA, Kenya – Police in Lurambi, Kakamega County, have launched an investigation into the gruesome murder of a 17-year-old girl, whose lifeless body was discovered inside a rental house just a day after she moved in with her suspected boyfriend.
According to preliminary reports, the prime suspect — believed to be the girl’s boyfriend — has since fled the country to Uganda, where unverified reports claim he may have taken his own life.
Both the deceased and the suspect are believed to be Ugandan nationals, and had only recently moved into the rental unit in Lurambi, raising questions about their background and purpose in the area.
The victim’s mother, who was aware of her daughter’s relationship, grew concerned after learning of the alleged suicide of the boyfriend in Uganda. She contacted relatives living in Kakamega to inquire about her daughter’s safety — only to be met with the devastating news.
“She couldn’t reach her daughter and feared the worst after hearing about the suicide. That’s when she reached out to relatives, who found the body,” said a source close to the family.
Local authorities have since launched a manhunt and cross-border efforts to verify the claims of the suspect’s death and establish a clearer timeline of events.
The incident has sent shockwaves through the Lurambi community, which had just begun to adjust to the couple’s arrival. Police have urged residents to remain calm as investigations unfold and further leads are pursued.
“We ask for calm and patience as we work closely with our Ugandan counterparts to trace the suspect and determine what happened,” said a senior officer from Kakamega Police Station.
The tragic murder adds to the growing number of gender-based violence (GBV) cases in Kenya and the East African region. Authorities continue to urge the public to report any signs of domestic violence or suspicious activity.
