NAIROBI, Kenya, Sept 18, 2025 – Former Interior Cabinet Secretary Fred Matiang’i has revealed that he will soon announce the political party under which he intends to run for president in the 2027 General Election.
Speaking during an exclusive interview on TV47 and Radio 47 on Wednesday night, Matiang’i dismissed speculation that he belongs to retired President Uhuru Kenyatta’s Jubilee Party.
“Are you vying in Jubilee Party?” anchor Dabarr Inea asked.
“When have I ever been a member of Jubilee?” Matiang’i responded.
The former CS said several political formations, including Uhuru’s Jubilee and Peter Munya’s Party of National Unity (PNU), have approached him. However, he clarified that he has not yet settled on a vehicle.
“My orientation to public service is essentially linked to Jubilee. If someone asked me about my political affiliations, they would obviously lean to Jubilee because I worked under the Jubilee government,” he explained.
Building a Coalition for 2027
Matiang’i revealed that he is in talks with like-minded leaders to form a coalition ahead of 2027. He urged Kenyans to remain patient, saying the choice of party will be unveiled at the right time.
“I do not know why people are being impatient,” Matiang’i remarked.
On whether he could work with the Democracy for the Citizens Party (DCP), recently unveiled by his political rival Rigathi Gachagua, the former CS remained non-committal.
“I will cross the bridge when I get there,” he said.
Matiang’i stressed that he is ready to face voters, seek their support, and accept the outcome of the democratic process.
Political Parties vs Leadership Qualities
The ex-CS argued that Kenya has many political parties but remains one of the least democratic nations. He urged voters to choose leaders based on integrity and capability rather than party affiliations.
“You can come here with a party called Jerusalem, but if you are a thief and a despicable character, Jerusalem Party doesn’t make you a holy fellow,” he said.
He emphasized that he values meaningful conversations with leaders more than political party politics.
Opposition Unity Ahead of 2027
Matiang’i is also part of the United Opposition, which brings together Rigathi Gachagua of DCP, Kalonzo Musyoka of the Wiper Democratic Movement, and Martha Karua of the Narc-Kenya/People’s Liberation Party alliance. All three leaders have signaled their interest in contesting the presidency.
The big question remains: who among these heavyweights is best positioned to carry the opposition’s flag in 2027? And can the opposition stay united against President William Ruto’s Kenya Kwanza Alliance?
