Veteran broadcast journalist Zubeidah Kananu Koome has officially exited KTN News after 18 years of service at the Standard Media Group.
In her farewell statement on Thursday, Zubeidah expressed gratitude to her colleagues and mentors, describing her nearly two-decade journey at the station as one filled with “lessons, growth, challenges, and friendships.”
“After 18 incredible years at Standard Group PLC, a chapter that has shaped my journey as a journalist, news anchor and editor, I am stepping into a new season. These years have been filled with lessons, growth, challenges and friendships I will forever treasure. I am deeply grateful to colleagues, mentors and friends who have worked this path with me,” Zubeidah said.
Career Journey at KTN
Koome joined KTN in 2007 as an intern during the general election season. Initially hired on a three-month contract, she later secured a one-year contract in 2008 before being confirmed as a permanent employee in 2009.
Over the years, she grew into one of the most respected faces on Kenyan television, anchoring major bulletins and hosting influential current affairs shows such as:
- Jukwaa la KTN
- Kioo cha Hoja
- Dira ya Wiki
Leadership Roles Beyond KTN
Zubeidah also holds the position of President of the Kenya Editors Guild (KEG), where she advocates for press freedom, professional standards, and the protection of journalists.
Despite announcing her exit, she did not reveal her next career destination, leaving speculation open about whether she will remain in mainstream media, shift to policy work, or join the digital content space.
A Celebrated Media Career
Zubeidah’s departure marks the end of an era at KTN, where she became a household name and mentored younger journalists. Her exit comes at a time when Kenya’s media industry is undergoing rapid transformation, with increased migration from traditional broadcasting to digital-first journalism.
