The heartbreaking story of former Citizen TV journalist Kimani Mbugua, who tragically took his own life on October 15, has left many Kenyans in shock and grief.
Speaking for the first time, his father, Dedan Kimathi, opened up about Kimani’s final moments and the emotional message he left behind before his death at a rehabilitation center.
“I Have Chosen to Rest in the Hands of God”
According to Kimathi, his son’s final words were deeply moving:
“I have chosen to rest in the hands of God.”
Kimani reportedly left a short handwritten note expressing his exhaustion after years of battling depression.
“I am tired; I have fought this body for long; it has affected my mind,” part of the note read.
“I have been in treatment, and I am not getting well. I have done the best in my life, but I want to rest. I have chosen rest, and I have no grudge with anyone.”
Family Speaks of His Final Days
Despite his long struggle with mental health, Kimathi said his son appeared stable and sober in the days leading up to his death. The two were in frequent communication, and there were no visible signs of distress.
“Even when the DCI came to take the body, we did not blame the facility. There is footage showing how he took his life,” Kimathi said, adding that the family believes the decision was self-inflicted and not caused by negligence.
