One person has died, and several others were left nursing serious injuries after a Citi Hoppa bus overturned near the Serena Hotel in Nairobi’s Central Business District (CBD) on Monday night.
Confirming the incident, Nairobi County Chief Officer for Environment Geoffrey Mosiria said the crash occurred at around 11:00 p.m. along Kenyatta Avenue, causing a major traffic snarl-up in the area.
Bus Loses Control Before Overturning
According to the Kenya Red Cross, the 51-seater Citi Hoppa bus reportedly lost control and overturned, trapping several passengers inside.
It remains unclear how many passengers were onboard at the time of the crash.
Witnesses said the bus was heading toward State House Road when it suddenly veered off its lane and rolled over.
Emergency Rescue Operation
Emergency responders from the Nairobi County Government, the Kenya Red Cross, and other first responders rushed to the scene to help free the trapped passengers and administer first aid.
“There has been a serious accident involving a Citi Hoppa bus near Serena, on the way to the State House. Many people have been injured, and some are trapped under the bus,” Mosiria said in a late-night statement.
The wreckage caused heavy traffic along Kenyatta Avenue as motorists and passersby gathered to assist in rescue efforts.
Authorities Launch Investigations
Police have launched investigations to establish the cause of the accident, with preliminary reports indicating that mechanical failure or speeding could have played a role.
The injured passengers were taken to various hospitals in Nairobi for treatment, while the deceased’s body was moved to the mortuary.
