Malava, Kakamega County, November 10, 2025 — The race for the Malava Constituency by-election has taken a new twist after Democratic National Alliance (DNA) candidate Joab Burudi Manyasi withdrew from the contest to back Seth Panyako of the Democratic Action Party–Kenya (DAP-K).
DAP-K confirmed the move in a statement on Sunday, saying it was made in unity to ensure residents backed a “local candidate” rather than an outsider.
“Joab Burudi Manyasi of the Democratic National Alliance (DNA) has officially stepped down in favour of Seth Panyako,” read part of the statement shared on the party’s official Facebook page.
“The people of Malava Constituency and Mulembe must choose their leaders without being imposed on by foreigners. Malava Decides! It’s Seth Panyako!”
Growing Support for Panyako
The announcement came just days after Rigathi Gachagua’s Democracy for Citizens Party (DCP) also withdrew its candidate in favour of Panyako, further consolidating support around the DAP-K nominee.
At a campaign rally in Kakamega, DAP-K Deputy Party Leader and Trans Nzoia Governor George Natembeya, joined by Senator Boni Khalwale, reaffirmed the coalition’s unity behind Panyako.
The Malava by-election has been marred by controversy since it was announced, following the death of MP Malulu Injendi.
Rift in UDA Over Malava Ticket
The ruling United Democratic Alliance (UDA) sparked uproar when it declined to give its ticket to Ryan Injendi, the late MP’s son. Instead, the party nominated Kabras West MCA David Ndakwa, drawing backlash from local leaders.
Ryan later accused Prime Cabinet Secretary Musalia Mudavadi of meddling in local politics.
Senator Boni Khalwale, a vocal UDA figure, also broke ranks with the party, declaring support for Panyako.
“Mr President, when Malulu died, Baringo Senator Cheptumo also died and his widow got a ministry. Migori’s Dalmas Otieno’s wife got a big state job. But for Malulu’s family, nothing was done,” Khalwale said during a rally on October 13.
“Since Ryan was denied that opportunity, we will decide who we’ll vote for without interference.”
UDA Issues Warning
A day later, UDA issued a show-cause letter to Khalwale for supporting a rival candidate . The party accused him of breaching the party’s Constitution.
Despite the warning, Khalwale has continued to appear alongside Panyako, Eugene Wamalwa, and George Natembeya at rallies across Kakamega.
Political observers say the latest realignment could shift momentum in Panyako’s favour, as more local leaders rally behind his candidacy.
