Police have launched investigations into a violent confrontation that left two people dead and several others injured following clashes between supporters of two Kasipul parliamentary by-election candidates on Thursday afternoon.
The chaos broke out at Opondo area in Central Kasipul Ward when supporters of independent candidate Phillip Aroko and ODM’s Boyd Were engaged in violent skirmishes during separate campaign rallies.
According to Homa Bay County Police Commander Lawrance Koilem, the confrontation started when Aroko and his team allegedly stormed Were’s campaign venue and fired shots into the air, sparking panic and violence.
Koilem said that as Were went to report the incident at Oyugis Police Station, his supporters retaliated, attacking Aroko’s group and fatally hacking two youths aged 26, both believed to be supporters of Aroko.
“Investigations are underway, and no one will be spared. We are on the ground to ensure all those responsible face the law,” said Koilem.
Leaders Condemn Violence
Homa Bay Governor and ODM Chairperson Gladys Wanga condemned the incident, calling on both the police and the Independent Electoral and Boundaries Commission (IEBC) to take swift and firm action against anyone involved in political violence ahead of the Kasipul by-election scheduled for November 27, 2025.
“Elections must not be a matter of life and death. We urge the authorities to ensure justice for the victims and guarantee peace before the polls,” said Wanga.
Background
The Kasipul parliamentary seat fell vacant following the murder of former MP Charles Ong’ondo Were, who was shot dead by unknown assailants in Nairobi earlier this year.
Police have since intensified security measures across Homa Bay County as campaigns heat up ahead of the by-election.
