The Kenya Defence Forces (KDF) has denied allegations that some of its officers stole part of a large methamphetamine haul seized during a multi-agency maritime security operation on October 25, 2025.
In a statement issued on Tuesday, KDF clarified details surrounding the interception of a dhow off the Kenyan coast, during which a joint security team confiscated 1,024 kilograms of crystal methamphetamine valued at KSh 8.2 billion. Six Iranian nationals suspected of trafficking the narcotics were arrested.
The operation involved the Kenya Navy, the Kenya Coast Guard Service, and NACADA, acting on intelligence provided by regional and international partners who had monitored the movement of the vessel through the western Indian Ocean.
KDF said the narcotics were offloaded under the supervision of a multi-agency team and safely transported to shore. However, media reports later suggested that some KDF personnel may have concealed part of the shipment for personal benefit.
“It has been alleged that during the operation, and as the narcotics were being offloaded for transport ashore, some KDF personnel involved in the mission stole and concealed a portion of the narcotics for personal gain,” KDF noted.
The military dismissed the claims, insisting that the entire consignment remained intact.
“We wish to clarify that the entire 1,024 kilograms of methamphetamine offloaded ashore remains intact and is under continuous, round-the-clock protection by a dedicated multi-agency security team,” the statement added.
KDF confirmed that investigations into the allegations are ongoing and assured that officers found culpable will face disciplinary and legal action.
