At least one person has been killed after a fuel tanker caught fire following a road accident along the Southern Bypass in Nairobi, police have confirmed.
The incident occurred under a bridge near the Carnivore Restaurant after a collision involving two trucks — a fuel tanker and a lorry transporting bales of flour.
According to police, the crash caused the fuel tanker to lose control, slide into the bridge and burst into flames, sending thick smoke billowing into the air and threatening nearby structures.
Southern Bypass Closed
Police and emergency response teams were immediately deployed to the scene, prompting the temporary closure of the busy Southern Bypass to allow firefighters to contain the blaze and ensure public safety.
Lang’ata Sub-County Police Commander Pius Mwanthi said the deceased was one of the drivers involved in the accident. The second driver was rescued from the wreckage and rushed to hospital with injuries.
Firefighters battled the inferno for several hours as traffic was diverted to alternative routes.
Authorities have launched investigations into the cause of the crash, while motorists have been urged to avoid the area until the road is declared safe and reopened.
