Six people have been confirmed dead and seven others injured following a horrific road accident involving a Passenger Service Vehicle (PSV) bus and a matatu along the busy Nairobi–Mombasa Highway.
The fatal crash occurred shortly after midnight on Friday night at the Katumani area near Konza Technopolis City, along the Machakos–Makueni county border.
Mukaa Sub-county Police Commander Hussein Abduba said the accident involved a matatu belonging to NAEKANA Sacco and a Tahmeed Coach bus. Preliminary investigations indicate that the matatu driver was travelling from Nairobi and attempted to overtake multiple vehicles before colliding head-on with the bus, which was heading towards Nairobi from Mombasa.
“The matatu driver attempted to overtake a lorry and other vehicles when he suddenly encountered the oncoming Tahmeed bus, resulting in a head-on collision,” Abduba said in a phone interview.
The impact of the collision was severe, leaving several passengers trapped in the wreckage. Emergency responders, including police officers and medical personnel, rushed to the scene to conduct rescue operations.
Six passengers died on the spot, while seven others sustained varying degrees of injuries and were rushed to nearby hospitals for treatment. The injured are reported to be in stable condition.
Police have since launched investigations to establish the exact circumstances that led to the crash. Authorities have once again urged motorists to exercise caution, especially when overtaking on major highways, warning that reckless driving continues to claim lives on Kenyan roads.
The Nairobi–Mombasa Highway remains one of the country’s busiest transport corridors and has witnessed a series of fatal accidents in recent months, often linked to speeding and dangerous overtaking.
