Kirinyaga Governor Anne Waiguru has called on residents of the Mt Kenya region to rally behind President William Ruto and support his bid for a second term in the 2027 general election, invoking the long-standing political understanding popularly referred to as “Yangu kumi, ya Ruto kumi.”
Speaking on Saturday during the launch of a maternity wing at Mutithi Health Centre in Mwea, Waiguru revived the phrase historically used to describe the informal power-sharing agreement between former President Uhuru Kenyatta and his then deputy, William Ruto.
She urged the region to honour what she termed as a promise made to Ruto, arguing that political credibility is built on trust and consistency.
“Uhuru himself said ‘yangu kumi, ya Ruto kumi’. As Mt Kenya, we must honour our promise. Politics is about trust, and once you break trust, no one takes you seriously again,” Waiguru said.
The governor warned that despite Mt Kenya’s numerical strength at the ballot, the region cannot form a government on its own without forging alliances with other communities across the country.
She cautioned that internal divisions and political betrayal could weaken Mt Kenya’s bargaining power and potentially isolate the region in national politics.
Waiguru further argued that continued support for the Kenya Kwanza administration would help protect ongoing development projects and ensure the region continues to benefit from government programmes aligned with the ruling coalition’s manifesto.
She dismissed calls for shifting allegiance to opposition formations, urging residents to remain united behind President Ruto’s leadership for the sake of stability and regional influence.
