A Kenyan woman identified as Margret Njeri Munai from Thika in Kiambu County is reportedly missing in Iraq after allegedly fleeing an abusive work environment in Mosul.
Margret had reportedly travelled to Iraq through a recruitment agency in search of employment opportunities as a domestic worker.
Allegations of Harsh Working Conditions
According to a close friend, Margret and other Kenyan workers allegedly faced difficult and unsafe conditions after arriving in Iraq.
Reports indicate that she later attempted to escape from her employer with the assistance of fellow Kenyans living in the country.
Allegedly Left at Police Checkpoint
During the escape attempt, Margret was reportedly left behind at a police checkpoint between Mosul and the Kurdistan border following disagreements over transport payment arrangements.
Authorities allegedly detained her after discovering that she did not possess an iqama — an Iraqi residence permit — and that her visa had expired.
Last Communication From Mosul Police Station
Her last known communication was reportedly made from a police station in Mosul before her phone went off.
Sources further claim that she was later accused of theft and escaping from her employer before being taken into custody.
Her current whereabouts remain unclear, raising concern among relatives and friends back home in Kenya.
Growing Concerns Over Kenyans Working Abroad
The case has reignited concerns over the safety and welfare of Kenyan migrant workers in Middle Eastern countries, particularly domestic workers who often rely on recruitment agencies for overseas jobs.
Families and rights groups have repeatedly called for stronger oversight and protection mechanisms for Kenyans seeking employment abroad.
Authorities have yet to issue an official update on Margret’s status or location.
