Democracy for Citizens Party (DCP) leader Rigathi Gachagua has defended retired President Uhuru Kenyatta, saying he has every democratic right to comment on national matters despite leaving office.
Gachagua Tells Leaders to “Leave Uhuru Alone”
Speaking during the funeral service of Reverend Catherine Macharia, wife to Full Gospel Church General Overseer Bishop David Macharia, in Nakuru County, Gachagua accused some Kenya Kwanza leaders of unfairly blaming Uhuru for challenges facing the country.
The remarks came a day after Kenyatta criticised the government over what he termed excessive blame games instead of focusing on governance and service delivery.
“Wachana na Uhuru Kenyatta. Alipeana serikali kwa amani. Ni Uhuru anafanya serikali isifanye kazi? Uhuru ndio anafanya SHA isifanye? Uhuru ndiye aliuwa Gen Zs?” Gachagua posed.
The DCP leader urged President William Ruto and his allies to stop shifting blame for government shortcomings.
“Don’t blame Uhuru Kenyatta for your failures. Leave Uhuru Kenyatta to be. He is retired but not tired,” Gachagua said.
Warning Against Tribal Politics
Gachagua also warned politicians against making inflammatory tribal remarks that could heighten tensions in the country ahead of the 2027 General Election.
“We don’t want what happened in 2007 to repeat. We don’t want the drums of war. Hatutaki jamii yoyote itishwe. This is your home and you have no other home. Mtu asiuziwe uoga. Waache kuprofile a community,” he stated.
He cautioned leaders against ethnic profiling and divisive rhetoric, saying Kenya must avoid a repeat of the violence witnessed after the disputed 2007 elections.
Claims Over 2027 Election Rigging
The former Deputy President further dismissed claims that the 2027 elections could be manipulated.
“Mtaiba kura tukiwa wapi? Hii si Uganda. Hii si Tanzania. Don’t threaten people. Those are empty debes,” he said.
Calls for Investigations Into Clergymen Deaths
Gachagua also called for speedy investigations into the deaths of several religious leaders, including:
- Julius Ngari Ndumia
- John Ndegwa Maina
He urged authorities to ensure justice and transparency in the investigations.
