Elon Musk has come under heavy criticism online after endorsing controversial comments targeting Lupita Nyong’o over her casting in The Odyssey.
The controversy erupted after acclaimed director Christopher Nolan confirmed that Nyong’o would portray Helen of Troy and her sister Clytemnestra in the upcoming adaptation of Homer’s legendary Greek epic.
Soon after the announcement, conservative commentator Matt Walsh questioned the casting on X, arguing that Helen of Troy was historically described as the most beautiful woman in the world. He further claimed Nolan avoided casting a white actress due to fears of being labelled racist.
Musk responded to the post with a single word: “True.”
Social Media Users Accuse Musk of Racism
The response quickly triggered widespread backlash online. Many users accused Musk of promoting racist and Eurocentric beauty standards by agreeing with Walsh’s remarks.
Several users defended Nyong’o, praising her beauty, acting talent, and achievements in Hollywood.
One user wrote that it was “open racism,” while another argued that critics were ignoring beauty outside traditional Western standards.
Nyong’o, who won an Oscar for her role in 12 Years a Slave, has not publicly commented on the matter.
The actress remains one of Africa’s most celebrated stars internationally and has consistently been recognised for her work in film and fashion.
Debate Over Representation in Hollywood
The controversy has reignited discussions about race, representation, and diversity in major Hollywood productions.
Supporters of the casting argue that mythological adaptations often evolve over time and should reflect modern storytelling and global audiences.
Others insist that historical and mythological characters should remain tied to traditional depictions.
The debate has continued trending across social media platforms, especially on X, which is owned by Musk.
Musk Previously Criticised The Odyssey
This is not the first time Musk has criticised the film’s casting decisions.
Earlier this year, the billionaire businessman claimed Nolan had “lost his integrity” because of some of the actors selected for the production.
Musk also shared posts criticising the reported casting of Elliot Page, who is rumoured to appear in the film.
The upcoming blockbuster also stars Matt Damon, Tom Holland, Zendaya, Anne Hathaway, Robert Pattinson and Charlize Theron.
According to reports, the movie follows Odysseus as he attempts to return home after the Trojan War. The film is expected to premiere globally on July 17.
