The National Transport and Safety Authority (NTSA) has suspended the operating licence of Nicco Movers 1 Sacco and ordered all its vehicles off the road following the death of 19-year-old KMTC student Eugene Mutuku.
In a directive issued by NTSA Director General Nashon Kondiwa, the authority announced the immediate suspension of the Sacco’s operations and instructed police officers nationwide to impound any Nicco Movers vehicles found operating in defiance of the order.
The move follows a tragic incident on June 4, 2026, involving Eugene Mutuku, a student at Kenya Medical Training College (KMTC), who allegedly lost his life after a dispute over a KSh20 fare.
According to reports, Mutuku was assaulted and pushed from a moving Nicco Movers matatu. The vehicle reportedly failed to stop after the incident, and he sustained severe injuries before being rushed to the hospital. He later succumbed while receiving treatment at the Kenyatta National Hospital.
An autopsy conducted on Mutuku’s body revealed that he died from multiple severe injuries and internal bleeding consistent with a fall from a moving vehicle.
The suspension comes as investigations into the incident intensify. Authorities have already arraigned two directors linked to the transport company in court, while detectives continue a manhunt for the matatu driver and conductor who were reportedly involved in the incident and remain at large.
NTSA said the action is aimed at safeguarding public safety and ensuring accountability within the public transport sector as investigations continue into the circumstances surrounding the student’s death.
The case has sparked public outrage, with many Kenyans demanding justice for the young student and stricter enforcement of safety regulations among public service vehicle operators.
