Nairobi, Kenya | January 23, 2026: President William Ruto has nominated the late former Prime Minister Raila Odinga’s widow Ida Odinga to serve as Kenya’s Ambassador and Permanent Representative to the United Nations Environment Programme (UNEP), a key diplomatic role based in Nairobi.
The nomination, announced on Friday afternoon has been formally transmitted to Parliament for vetting and approval, as required for senior Foreign Service appointments.
The development places Mama Ida Odinga at the centre of Kenya’s global environmental diplomacy, a sector that has remained a strategic focus of the country’s foreign policy.
Veteran Educationist and Civic Leader
Mama Ida Odinga is a respected educationist, civic leader, and long-time advocate for social justice and gender equity. She began her professional career as a graduate teacher at Highway Secondary School in Nairobi before moving to Kenya High School, where she taught for more than a decade.
According to the nomination statement, her years in the classroom “nurtured a deep-rooted and enduring commitment to education,” a value that has continued to shape her public service work.
She is widely recognised for her lifelong dedication to empowering women and girls through education, leadership, and civic participation.
Legacy of Public Service and Activism
Mama Ida Odinga has a long history of political and civic activism. During the early 1990s, as Kenya transitioned from a single-party system to multiparty democracy, she played a notable role in pushing for political reforms.
She later served as the founding Chairperson of the League of Kenya Women Voters, using the platform to advocate for democratic governance, voter education, and gender equality.
Since then, she has remained actively involved in initiatives supporting women, children, youth, and vulnerable communities.
Private Sector and National Recognition
Beyond public activism, Mama Ida Odinga has also contributed to Kenya’s private sector. She has held leadership roles in family-owned enterprises, including East African Spectre, a liquefied gas cylinder manufacturing company that has contributed to the country’s energy supply chain.
Her work has earned both national and international recognition. She holds two Honorary Doctor of Letters (Honoris Causa) degrees and was awarded Kenya’s highest civilian honour, the Elder of the Order of the Golden Heart (E.G.H.), in 2018.
Additional accolades include the Trailblazer Award and the Lifetime Achievement Award from the Human Achievers Foundation.
Strengthening Kenya’s Environmental Diplomacy
The role will place her at the heart of global discussions on climate change, sustainable development, and environmental governance, working closely with UNEP member states and UN agencies.
“The appointment is expected to amplify Kenya’s voice on environmental issues and further reinforce the country’s longstanding leadership in environmental diplomacy,” the nomination document stated.
Awaiting Parliamentary Approval
The nomination now awaits parliamentary approval, a constitutional requirement overseen by the National Assembly of Kenya, which vets all senior diplomatic appointments before confirmation. If approved, Mama Ida Odinga will take up the role as Kenya seeks to strengthen its influence in global environmental policy and advance sustainable development on the international stage.
