A 15-year-old girl has died following a suspected carbon monoxide poisoning incident in Uplands Village within Salgaa, Nakuru County.
Two younger children survived the incident and are currently receiving treatment, according to police.
Teenager Found Dead Inside Rental House
Police said the incident was reported on Friday morning at around 9:03 a.m.
Officers who visited the scene established that the body of the teenage girl was found lying on the floor inside a rental house in Uplands Village.
Investigators suspect the girl may have died from suffocation caused by fumes emitted from a charcoal stove, commonly known as a jiko, which had reportedly been used inside the house overnight.
Two Children Rescued Alive
Authorities said two children aged four and seven were rescued alive from the same room and rushed to Rongai Dispensary for treatment.
Police further revealed that the children’s mother was not at home at the time the incident occurred.
Investigations Underway
The scene was processed and documented by investigators before the body was moved to the Nakuru Provincial General Hospital mortuary pending a postmortem examination.
Police say investigations into the circumstances surrounding the incident are ongoing.
Carbon Monoxide Warning
Carbon monoxide is often referred to as a silent killer because it is colourless, odourless, and highly toxic.
Health experts have repeatedly warned against using charcoal stoves or other fuel-burning appliances inside poorly ventilated rooms, especially while sleeping.
