Kenyan gospel singer Rachel Wandeto has died while receiving treatment at Kenyatta National Hospital, days after she was allegedly attacked and set on fire by unknown assailants in Mwiki, Nairobi.
Her death was confirmed on Monday, May 18, after she succumbed to severe burn injuries sustained during the horrifying attack.
Attackers Allegedly Doused Her With Petrol
Wandeto had been admitted in critical condition after assailants reportedly ambushed her, poured petrol on her body, and set her ablaze in Mwiki.
The gospel singer suffered extensive burns and had been fighting for her life in hospital since the incident.
The attack triggered widespread shock and condemnation across the country after videos and photos of her condition circulated online.
Case Drew Attention From Interior CS Murkomen
The incident had earlier attracted the attention of Interior Cabinet Secretary Kipchumba Murkomen, who visited Wandeto while she was hospitalised.
Murkomen also directed police to speed up investigations into the attack and bring those responsible to justice.
Possible Political Motive Under Investigation
Authorities have not yet officially established the motive behind the attack.
However, early reports suggested there could have been political undertones linked to Wandeto’s vocal public support for President William Ruto, claims that investigators are still examining.
Wandeto had gained public attention earlier after tattooing President Ruto’s face and political slogans on her body.
Calls for Justice Intensify
Her death has sparked renewed calls for swift investigations and justice from Kenyans, religious leaders, and public figures, with many condemning the brutality of the attack.
