A Nairobi-based gospel artiste who suffered severe burn injuries after being allegedly attacked and set on fire in Mwiki has emotionally narrated the terrifying ordeal from her hospital bed.
Speaking while receiving treatment at Kenyatta National Hospital, Rachel Wandeto recounted how a group of men allegedly confronted her before dousing her with petrol and setting her ablaze.
“They Poured Petrol on Me and Lit It”
In a video that has since circulated widely online, Wandeto, writhing in pain, described the moments leading to the attack.
“I was from my place taking luggage to another woman,” she said.
According to the gospel singer, she noticed a group of men allegedly following her before they confronted her over claims that she was benefiting alone from political connections.
“They were telling me that I have decided to be eating the government’s money alone,” she stated.
She alleged that the men surrounded her and forced her to continue walking before attacking her at the end of the road.
“They encircled me and asked me to keep walking,” Wandeto said.
“At the end of the road, they dragged me, poured petrol on me and lit it. Then they ran away.”
Singer Became Known After Tattooing President Ruto’s Face
Wandeto, a gospel musician from Mwiki in Kasarani, gained public attention earlier this year after tattooing the face of President William Ruto on her chest alongside the phrase “Tutam,” interpreted to mean “Two Terms.”
According to relatives, the attackers allegedly accused her of receiving money and favours from the President because of her vocal political support and public displays of loyalty.
Family members claim the assailants demanded a share of the alleged benefits and attacked her after she insisted she had received nothing.
Sustained Approximately 70 Percent Burns
The attackers reportedly poured petrol on her body, set her hair on fire, and fled, leaving her with extensive injuries.
Wandeto was initially taken to Uzima Uhai Hospital before being transferred to Kenyatta National Hospital for specialised treatment.
Doctors reportedly confirmed that she suffered approximately 70 percent burns.
Calls for Justice
Photos and videos showing the extent of her injuries have sparked widespread condemnation online, with Kenyans, religious leaders, and public figures calling for swift investigations and justice for the artiste.
Police are expected to investigate the allegations surrounding the attack.
